EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

What is EMDR and what can I expect?

What is EMDR?
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a type of therapy that helps people heal from distressing or traumatic experiences. Sometimes painful memories or long-standing struggles, like anxiety or depression that have lasted for years, can get “stuck” in the brain, keeping us from feeling relief or moving forward. EMDR helps your brain process these experiences in a healthy way so that the emotional intensity decreases and you can begin to feel more at peace.

During EMDR sessions, you’ll focus on a memory or issue while gently following guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. This process helps your mind reprocess the memory, reducing distressing emotions and creating space for healthier thoughts and coping strategies.

EMDR can be used for trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, and other ongoing emotional struggles. Many people find that it brings relief more quickly than talk therapy alone and helps them build lasting resilience and hope.

How long does each therapy session last?

Each therapy session typically lasts 50 to 60 minutes. Sessions begin like any regular therapy session, checking in on how you’re feeling and how your week has been. You are always in control—if you don’t want to do EMDR during a session, we won’t. If you choose to proceed, I ensure each session ends on time, helping you leave feeling grounded and ready to continue your day.

How many sessions will I need to attend?

This is a common question. It’s not possible to predict exactly how many EMDR sessions a client will need, because everyone’s brain processes experiences at its own pace—similar to how each person’s metabolism is different. You are always in control of the process and can pause or stop EMDR at any time. I provide clinical recommendations, but you have the final say in your treatment.

Do you offer online therapy sessions?

Yes, I offer online therapy sessions for those who prefer the convenience and flexibility of virtual appointments. Research shows that virtual EMDR sessions are just as effective as in-office sessions. To get the most from your session, it’s important to choose a quiet space free from distractions.

Do you accept insurance, and how is payment handled?

EMDR therapy is billed the same way as any other mental health session, as it is simply another effective therapy modality. I accept BCBS, Aetna, and Cigna insurance. For clients paying out of pocket, my self-pay rate can be found on the pricing page of my website.
